Traditions come in all shapes, forms and sizes. Some are big, some are very small.
Most traditions occur in or around the holidays. For me, traditions were rather elusive while I was growing up, and as a result, I try to push certain traditions on my family. Like I said before, some are big and some are small. Mine are usually pretty small, but none the less, they’re important to me as an individual.
One of my favorite traditions is going to a theme park in the month of December. It’s usually Silver Dollar City n Branson, Missouri or, when we have the money to go, Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. There’s nothing like being in the mountains during the Christmas season! There’s a magical feeling that seems to creep all over me. I’m not sure what it is, but I like it, and that’s whay that particular tradition exists.
I’m not sure yet if we’re going to be able to afford either one this year, but I certainly know I’ll try as hard as I can to make it happen! Last year when we went to Silver Dollar City during the month of December, it started snowing when we got there and it was still snowing when we left… How’s that for a Christmas moment to remember???
Other traditions are quite small in comparison, but they’re still traditions. Putting up the Christmas tree the weekend after Thanksgiving. I know lots of families that do that. Black Friday has become quite the tradition itself.
When I first got married and still lived in Houston, my wife, her sister and her daughter, and sometimes even her mom would get up at some really weird time so they could go to as many of the Black Friday sales as they could. They’d stay out as long as their legs (And wallets) would allow!
Another tradition I’ve grown to love is Thanksgiving dinner! I know it takes a lot of time to prepare and I’m always soooo happy when they decide to cook instead of going out. There’s just something about being able to gobble until you wobble and then watching a football game or even your eyelids! Watching everybody hover over the food, picking out their favorite parts of the turkey or grabbing a third spoonful of mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes. For me, it’s always the third piece of chocolate pie!!! While restaurants are good, unless it’s an all you can eat buffet, it’s never going to compete with a traditional home cooked meal on Thanksgiving day!
I know there are a ton more traditions that I could go into, but, after all, it is Thanksgiving day. It’s time for me to go visit with my family and thank God for my blessings yet one more time. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, and may God give you the ability to keep or start an important tradition of your own. In a nutshell, yes, traditions are that important!
