There are actually several debates here, but before we get too involved, I’ll fill you in on what happened.
A mother slapped her crying 13-month-old daughter on a flight between Dallas and Albuquerque because the child kicked her. A Southwest Airlines flight attendant removed the child from the mother during the flight after she saw the mother slap her and passengers complained.
No charges were filed and the family was allowed to continue their trip. It obviously didn’t make a mark.
The flight attendant also says the child had a black eye. Both parents said that it came from an earlier dog bite.
The incident has sparked debate about when to intervene in child discipline.
First of all, I’ve got news for anyone who tries to take my child away from me! If you want a fight, just try!
That’s probably my biggest issue with the whole situation. I don’t care who you are, you do not have the right to take someones child because they got slapped! It’s none of your business, so you should stay the hell away! (Getting angry just thinking about it!)
If you believe a mother slapping her 13 month old is child abuse, you need to call the local authorities and let them deal with the situation. It’s not your place to remove the child.
When is it appropriate for you to step in and take a child away from a family member? There’s not even a debate… it’s when you see physical abuse that’s not letting up. A parent, for instance, who is continually striking their child is out of control and someone should indeed step in. I know I would! A mother who slaps her child? I don’t think so!
That’s what’s wrong with children today. (How many times have you heard that before?) There are no physical consequences for their actions. Parents are afraid to punish their children for fear of being reported as a child abuser by every Tom Good Wannabe in America!
While child abuse prevention is a responsibility laid upon the human soul, it should not interfere with a parents right to bust their child in the rear or an occasional slap across the face. Proverbs 13:24 says “The one who spares his rod hates his child, but the one who loves his child is diligent in disciplining him.” Proverbs 29:17 says “Discipline your child, and he will give you rest; he will bring you happiness.” (NET)
I don’t condone child abuse. Parents, or anyone else for that matter, who decides to use a child as a punching bag needs to have 10 times worse done to them! A parent who disciplines their child in accordance with the law should be left alone!
The Arkansas Spanking Law states “Abuse does not include physical discipline of a child if reasonable and moderate and inflicted by a parent or guardian for restraining or correcting a child.”
The bottom line is simple. If you see someone spanking their child, why not just hang out and see what’s happening? Why not take the time to make sure the child is getting abused before you decide to take action, get the parents arrested or detained and possibly ruin their reputation. So you don’t believe in spanking? Good for you… who cares. Maybe when your 14 year old child (The one who was never disciplined) is hitting and kicking you, a flight attendant will come by and render aid.
